One-Week Nature Study Challenge

In just 5 days, you can jump start your nature studies and using a nature journal.  Or revive interest in journaling by teaching easy habits and routines to make your observations easier.

Wouldn't it be amazing if you could just...

Go outside and know what to draw in your nature journal

Have routines in place to make it easy for your kids to express their observations

Enjoy the outdoors and learning together with your family

You’ve wanted to include nature study, but between juggling subjects and feeling unsure how to ‘do it right,’ it always gets pushed aside. This one-week challenge simplifies the process and gives you the structure and encouragement you need to finally make nature journaling doable—and delightful.

I designed this course so that you could overcome the challenges we have faced.

What's Included in the One-Week Challenge

The One-Week Nature Study Challenge is designed specifically for homeschoolers eager to embrace the joys of nature journaling.  This course empowers homeschool families to nurture natural inquisitiveness through simple, structured daily activities that teach children how to notice, ask questions, and record their discoveries in nature journals.  Gain confidence and fresh inspiration as you make nature study a meaningful and regular part of your learning routine while enriching your children's education with hands-on, creative engagement.

Course Outline:

  • Before you begin:  Set up your One-Week Challenge according to your schedule. You'll learn how to plan based on the time you have.
  • Day 1:  Make a cover page and learn an easy 2-step routine to make any session start off well.
  • Day 2:  Learn a pattern for recording your observations with a set of three things to draw in your nature journal.
  • Day 3:  Train your eye to see objects using drawing tricks like contour drawing and finding shapes within the shapes.

Have a burning question?
  • Do I have to complete the course in 5 days?
No, you can take as long as you like. First, you have lifetime access to this course.

Second, the 5-day Challenge is designed to help you get moving quickly with Nature Study. You could use the course over a break or the summer if you choose to do it one week. But the course also works if you want to use it once a week for 5 weeks. You may lose some momentum, but you can make it work for your situation.

Third, you can "take" the course more than once. By revisiting a lesson or module, you can keep improving your nature study skills.
  • Is this course good for all ages?
The course is designed for multiple ages. Nature study can begin early, but you shouldn't require a child under age 6 to use a nature journal. If your young child is eager, you can let them journal if interested.

You want to be sure to include activities to keep the youngest children engaged if you are journaling with older children. We'll talk about strategies throughout the course.
  • Do my kids have to watch the videos?
You can decide what works for your family. If you as the parent watch the video first, you can choose how to present the information to your kids.
  • Can my kids complete this course on their own?
Older students may be able to complete the course on their own. The Start Here module contains planning and scheduling information and ideas. If your older student is going to take this course without you, I recommend reviewing the schedule for the week together. As they finish each lesson, see if they'd like to share what they learned.

There are many benefits to completing the course together as a family, the primary one being that your kids see you modeling the behavior. If you think it is important, they will pick up on that.
  • What supplies do I need?
Paper and pencil are the minimum supplies. Many people choose to dedicate a blank notebook for a nature journal. Recommended optional additional supplies you may want as your skills improve are listed in the "Resources" section of the course.
  • Are there printable downloads?
The course will supply you with samples and printable lists for working the exercises and learning the techniques. The Exercises are also available in PDF format.
  • Who is this course best suited for?
The course is designed for homeschooling families with a wide age range of children.

However, younger children, those under age 6, will be best suited to enjoy nature through games and exploration, rather than relying on using a nature journal. If you have a mixed age range which includes the younger kids, you need to be prepared to engage them while others are noting observations in their journals.

Children with little experience in nature journaling will gain techniques to approach nature.

Finally, families who have done nature study in the past, but have been frustrated with their attempts may find solutions and ideas to re-spark interest.
  • How much time will it take daily?
The 5-day structure of the course is flexible in how long it will take. You tailor it to your schedule. You'll want to allot a minimum of 15 - 30 minutes per day. If you choose to take the longer day options, like a hike or a field trip, you will spend more time in nature. But the theory of "short lessons" suggests that you may want to restrict your "lesson" time to short bursts of 15 - 30 minutes depending on your kids. Watch your kids to make sure their needs are being met.
